Essential Business & Workforce Services Monitored Visitation

The public policy of the state of California is to protect the best interest of the children whose parents have a custody or visitation matter in family court. Sometimes, based on issues of protection and safety, a judge will order that a child only has contact with a parent when a neutral third person is present during the visitation. This type of third-person visitation arrangement is often called "supervised visitation."

The purpose of supervised visitation is to allow the parent access to their child in a safe environment and to continue to support the child-parent relationship while ensuring the child is not harmed in any way.

A judge may order supervised visitation for many reasons, like:

  •  To give the visiting parent a chance to address specific issues;

  • To help reintroduce a parent and a child after a long absence;

  • To help introduce a parent and a child when there has been no existing relationship between them;

  • When there is a history or allegations of domestic violence, child abuse and neglect, or substance abuse;

  • When there are parenting concerns or mental illness; or

  • When there is a parental threat of abduction.

Most parents are unhappy that they must visit their children under the watchful eye of a stranger. However, the best course of action is generally to address the court's concerns and focus on how to win a more favorable visitation plan moving forward.

Goals for a Successful Visit

  • A safe and secure setting where the child and their parents under the guidance of an impartial person.

  • The child(ren) feels emotionally and physically safe during the visit.

  • Improve the parent-child relationship.

  • Conflict -free experience for everyone.

  • Increased time between the non-custodial parent and the child in the future.

  • Progress towards non-supervised visitation.
